Encinitas Man Loses Life in Pedestrian Accident While Trying to Cross El Camino Real

A man from Encinitas lost his life recently when he was hit by a car while attempting to cross El Camino Real. The 46-year-old tried to cross the busy road on a recent evening when he was hit by a Toyota Camry traveling north in the 100 block of El Camino Real, according to witnesses. Investigators are still looking into the case and planning to speak to the driver and examine the vehicle involved in the crash.

The 46-year-old man, who suffered severe injuries in the crash, was rushed by rescue workers to a nearby hospital for treatment. He did not have any identification on him at the time. Unfortunately, hospital staff were unable to save his life; his injuries proved fatal approximately one day after the accident.

Approximately 60 San Diego County residents lose their lives in pedestrian accidents each year, according to the California Department of Public Health. Anywhere from 350 to 500 people are injured in San Diego County pedestrian accidents each year. In recent years, men have been slightly more likely than women to be hit in pedestrian accidents, but women have been slightly more likely to die as a result of their injuries.

The number of pedestrian accidents has decreased slightly in recent years, but motorists should still take care to watch for pedestrians in order to help avoid accidents.

Britney Spears Involved in Third Notable Car Accident

Earlier today, Britney Spears crashed the front of her Mercedes SL into the rear of a red Ford Explorer while driving on the Strip in Los Angeles. Luckily there were no significant injuries.

This is the third notable accident Britney has been involved in. On April 14, it was reported that Ms. Spears rear-ended another vehicle when she failed to realize that the vehicle in front of her came to a stop.

She was also involved in a hit and run accident when she struck a parked car while trying to park her vehicle:

We say this (slightly) jokingly: “Will she spend the money to hire a driver before she kills someone?”

It is very clear that Ms. Spears is an extremely poor driver and is a danger to herself and others. Her license should be revoked. If Ms. Spears was not a celebrity and just a regular driver, she would have already lost her license after being involved in multiple accidents, including a hit and run accident.

We can only hope she stops driving before she does kill someone.…

Self-Driving Cadillacs May Hit Market in 2015, Say Developers

Cadillacs that can pilot themselves on the road and navigate traffic safely may be available to purchase as soon as 2015, according to the vehicle’s developers. The system, known as “Super Cruise,” incorporates automatic steering, automatic braking, and a system that centers the vehicle in its lane. Using the system to drive the vehicle is optional, and the driver can switch it on or off at any time.

Components of the system will be available in some 2013 Cadillacs. These vehicles will include features like reverse-gear auto-braking and a driver’s seat that vibrates to warn the driver of certain dangers, like leaving the lane or getting too close to another vehicle.

General Motors, which makes the Cadillac, has been working on auto-drive safety features since 1997, when it started by covering vehicles with magnets used to sense the vehicle’s distance from other magnet-covered cars. A significant breakthrough came in 2007, when the company developed a way to integrate information from multiple sensors fast enough for the vehicle’s computers to “understand” and react so as to avoid a motor vehicle collision.

Vehicle sensors and other safety technology help drivers avoid accidents by letting them know what’s going on around the vehicle, alerting them to possible dangers, and making it easier to steer or stop the vehicle safely. However, every driver still has a responsibility to pay attention to the road and avoid accidents. NHTSA Proposes Accelerator-Override Systems to Improve Car Safety

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently proposed new regulations that would require passenger cars, trucks, and vans sold in the U.S. to come with automatic accelerator-override systems. The system would kick in if the accelerator became stuck or if the accelerator and brake pedals were pushed at the same time. It would stop the vehicle’s acceleration and slow it down, helping to prevent a serious car accident.

The proposed regulations would require new cars sold in the U.S. to have accelerator-override systems that would slow the car down, regardless of what caused the acceleration to go out of control. Electrical problems, stuck floor mats, auto product defects, and accelerator pedals stuck in the floor carpeting have all caused out-of-control acceleration and vehicle crashes in recent years, according to the NHTSA. The systems would have to prevent the car from accelerating in each of these situations.

Some vehicles already come equipped with similar systems, according to the NHTSA. However, the agency is interested in requiring them on all motor vehicles, especially since stuck accelerators in various Toyota models have caused serious accidents or deaths in recent years. Toyota was fined $50 million for unnecessarily delaying the recall to fix the problem. The recall was eventually issued in February 2011 and it affected over 2 million U.S. vehicles.

Woman Arrested for DUI after Fatal Anaheim Car Accident

Cameron Cook, 18, of Ladera Ranch was killed in a fatal Orange County DUI car accident that occurred on April 2, 2011 around 11:40 p.m., south of Katella Avenue along the 57 freeway in Anaheim, approximately 91 miles from San Diego. California Highway Patrol officers reported that Cook was a passenger in a Camaro that was struck by a Honda Civic driven by Ashley Bryan.

California Highway Patrol officer Devon Boatman said that the Camaro spun after being struck and finally came to rest facing north on the right shoulder of No. 5 lane along the southbound 57 freeway. The vehicle was then struck by Bryan’s vehicle, pushing Cook over the edge of an overpass to the ground below. Cook was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials later arrested Bryan on suspicion of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter. From the available information, it is clear that Bryan’s negligent actions lead to this fatal car accident that killed the teenager. It is indeed an unfortunate thing that due to the negligent and intoxicated driver the young teenager lost her life. Bryan will most likely be found to have violated California Vehicle Code Section 23152(a) which states that “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”

Cook’s family members should consult with an experienced wrongful death lawyer in Orange County to obtain compensation to pay funeral and burial costs, loss of earnings and financial support, and loss of love and companionship. Our law office offers sincere condolences to all those who knew and loved Cook for their loss.…

U-Turn Attempt on CR-98 Results in Injuries

A man who tried to make an improper U-turn on CR-98 near Woodland recently caused a crash that left him with possibly severe injuries, according to a recent article in The Daily Democrat.

The driver, a 90-year-old Woodland resident, tried to make a U-turn and head in the opposite direction on CR-98 from the way he was driving. During the turn, his vehicle crashed into a truck driven by another Woodland resident, a 58-year-old woman. Rescue workers took the 90-year-old to a local hospital for evaluation of the bloody nose and neck pain he suffered in the crash. The other driver did not appear to be injured at the scene.

Many traffic rules are indicated by signs, signals, and lines painted on roadways, but others are not always made obvious on every stretch of road. Drivers are expected to know the rules of the road and to follow them in order to avoid serious accidents that may leave themselves and others injured or even killed.
